Perry is born the 25th of July 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry she was timid to perform in the school, began performing at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. Then, homelessness drove her to California for theater roles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. She was also cast in The CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. She was cast in the role despite her close family connection to the character.
